God’s all-purpose store: 4 things scripture tell us about how He takes care of our needs

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
- Luke 12:27-31 (NIV)

This passage is one of my all-time favorites. So many times I have read it, and yet I can barely grasp the edges of it. The completeness of how God cares for you and I is not a reality I live in.

I spend so much time thinking about my own life. I think about wrinkles. I think about my children’s futures (ad literal nauseam!) I think about what we will do this summer and how we will not fall into electronics addiction. I think about my health and what I ate yesterday and how dumb it was.

Friends, I am so wrapped up in myself. (It’s embarrassing but true.) 🤦‍♀️

I read this passage of scripture and I am utterly humiliated in the best way. Jesus compares us to wild flowers (of which there are billions). He also says He sees each one and takes care of them, yet cares for us even more. The God of the universe values you and I. He wants to clothe us in good things, so we can stop thinking so much and start resting. He wants us all wrapped up in Him.

In this time of transition for our family, I have often asked myself, “What do I need right now?” Sometimes I am not sure. My body is telling me I need a snack, or ten. Or I need a nap. There are valid, deep needs we all have that must be met. Needs for security. For love. For companionship. For confidence to face the day. Some of these will come from friends and family. Some will come from God.

The good news is He is going to provide. In fact, he says we are clothed more splendidly than Solomon (the Jeff Bezos of his time. I’m ready for my yacht, Lord.)

Four key ideas from this scripture to remember:

  1. God is busy at work behind the scenes of your life, so that you can have times of rest

  2. Whatever He provides will be more valuable than anything you could do on your own

  3. God values you as you are today, not based on what you can accomplish or own

  4. Setting your heart on what you need (or overthinking it) is not productive, but putting God first is

What do you need from God today?

What do you need to be clothed with in this season? Imagine it like a royal robe being draped around your shoulders. What do you need to spend less time thinking about and more time surrendering?

Let us not be the ones of little faith. Let us fall weakly, helplessly into trust that He will meet every need. Every single need.
