Struggle with feeling aimless or insecure? Find your significance here.
This time of year (May) brings out the darling social posts with all of the happy faces and your friend’s kid’s long list of accomplishments. It can make you feel less than good, if your life isn’t so spit-polished and shiny. (Whose is?) It can make you wonder about your own significance.
Do you ever feel like you’re falling short of what you’re supposed to be doing or who you’re supposed to be at this point?
I was praying over some hard situations recently, situations where I feel like I have expended all of my energy, and used the extents of my knowledge, and don’t know what else to do. What I heard from God keeps coming back to me.
What is significant to you, Angie, is not necessarily the same thing as what is significant to me.
It made me wonder if I am asking Him all the wrong questions.
It’s like when friends visit one of the Hawaiian islands that I don’t live on (there are 5 main islands) and then text me to ask, “When can we meet up?” Um. I’m not sure how to answer that question because it’s not the right one. A better question to start with would be, “Which island do you live on?” Or “How far can you swim?” 😁
There is not always a clear path to what we want because we aren’t pointed in the right direction. Sometimes that is because we are seeking significance in places that aren’t meant for us.
And when we seek significance outside of God’s will for us, we end up feeling insecure, aimless, and discouraged.
When we are aligned with his will and working for the right reasons, we really don’t care too much about how accomplished we are, or what other people think. It doesn’t matter. We only have One “person” to please.
Significance is found in this one place only, and we will spend a lifetime refocusing and refocusing our eyes on Him. People spend billions trying to buy significance. They spend their careers trying to earn it. But a life spent in the company of God, being found in Him alone, far outweighs any other. You, friend, are immeasurably significant to Him.
Some good questions to ask yourself in this season:
Am I inviting God into EVERY area of my life and work and family or am I holding some parts back?
Am I listening to Him well so I can follow his will?
Is my heart pure in wanting to follow his will, even if it feels like he’s asking me to make changes I don’t want?
Am I working at everything for Him or for my own glory?
A few scriptures to meditate on this week:
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. -Colossians 3:23
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. -Matthew 6:19-21
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. -1 Peter 2:9
